If you’ve ordered a custom UTV wrap and are wondering if you can install it yourself — the answer is: yes, you absolutely can. With the right tools, prep, and patience, you can wrap your UTV at home in your garage and end up with a pro-level finish.

This step-by-step guide breaks down exactly how to install a UTV wrap, what tools you’ll need, and tips to avoid the common mistakes that ruin clean installs.

Tools You’ll Need to Install a UTV Wrap

Here’s what we recommend having on hand before you start:

Required:

  • Heat gun or hair dryer
  • Felt-edge squeegee
  • Utility knife (fresh blade)
  • Isopropyl alcohol (70% or higher)
  • Clean microfiber towels
  • Non-scratch surface cleaner
  • Masking tape (optional, for positioning)
  • Patience (lots of it 😎)
  • A buddy or two.

Very optional but helpful:

  • Vinyl edge sealer (for added durability)
  • Magnetic wrap gloves
  • Surface prep spray (wrap-safe)

Step 1: Prep Is Everything

Clean, then clean again.

Your wrap will only stick as well as your surface is clean. Use isopropyl alcohol and microfiber towels to clean all panels that will be wrapped — especially textured plastics.

Don’t just wipe — scrub into:

  • Door panels
  • Fender flares
  • Hood curves
  • Seams and edges

Pro Tip: Wash your machine the day before and let it fully dry before wiping with alcohol.

Step 2: Position and Plan Your Panels

Lay out each wrap panel near its corresponding body part. At Deviant Ink, every wrap is pre-cut and labeled for your specific machine. (newer models)

Before peeling the backing off the big pieces, line up the panel and plan:

  • Where you’ll start
  • Where your alignment points are
  • How you’ll stretch or tuck around edges
  • Deviant Ink wraps are extremely forgiving. If you need to pull a piece up to realign, no problem at all.

Use masking tape to hold panels in place temporarily if needed. We typically only do this with very large pieces. Medium to smaller size pieces you can apply pretty easy and if you need to pull it back up and reposition the piece, not a problem with premium vinyl decals like Deviant Ink.

Step 3: Apply the Vinyl with Heat + Pressure

If you’re working with a large piece, peel the backing off a small section (6–12 inches) and begin applying the vinyl to your first area.

Work methodically:

  1. Stick the vinyl gently at one corner or your predetermined anchor point.
  2. Use your felt-edge squeegee to smooth it down, working outward.
  3. If the piece is giving you minor trouble, apply a light heat (180–200°F) with your heat gun to activate the adhesive and help conform over curves. You’ll still want to go over your entire kit with a final post heat activation.
  4. Don’t over-stretch or overheat. Vinyl likes pressure more than pulling.

Step 4: Tuck, Trim, and Finish the Edges

Use your utility knife to trim excess vinyl at edges, vents, or bolt holes. Always use a fresh blade and cut on the outside, not against your paint or plastics.

For edges:

  • Tuck the vinyl gently under plastic lips
  • Use heat to “set” the vinyl

Step 5: Let It Set

After your full wrap is installed, let your machine sit indoors for 24 hours if possible. This helps the adhesive bond completely.

Avoid pressure washing or heavy mud rides for 48 hours to give the wrap time to cure.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Rushing the prep (dirt = bubbles)
  • Wrapping cold panels (vinyl won’t conform)
  • Overheating one area (can cause warping)
  • Skipping squeegee steps (results in air pockets)
  • Stretching vinyl too tight around curves

Don’t Want to DIY?

No problem. Many Deviant Ink customers choose to have a local shop install their wrap. Our wraps are cut for easy installs by any vehicle wrap pro — just bring your kit and let them know it’s designed for UTV plastics.
